Mentorship Program

Jumpstart Newark is introducing our Mentorship Program. The goal of this program is for up and coming developers, who have already completed the Jumpstart Newark training program and have a project they are currently working on, to receive guidance and support from an experienced professional.

Jumpstart Newark is currently in the process of recruiting mentors for the mentorship program. In order to qualify for participation in a mentor capacity, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Residential and/or commercial real estate development experience. We are seeking experienced developers who have developed or flipped at least 4 units

  • Understand most or all of the development process applications outlined in the Jumpstart Newark Workbook

  • Engage with the mentee until project completion or 1 year

  • Seasoned Leadership capabilities

  • High personal, moral, and ethical standards

  • Share and support the Jumpstart Newark mission

Mentor applicants must also meet the following expectations and responsibilities:

  • Establish communication with your mentee

  • Determine realistic and attainable expectations for the mentee and mentor, and determine the best form(s) of communication.

  • Maintain confidentiality

  • Complete and return the annual program evaluation for each mentee

  • Be positive, honest, and approachable

  • Develop a positive counseling relationship and a climate of open communication

  • Get to know the person you are mentoring on both a personal and professional level

  • Provide guidance on real estate development

  • Be respectful and supportive of your mentee

  • Be available by phone, email, and/or in person

  • Be sincere. Praise efforts as well as accomplishments

  • Help mentees identify problems and solutions

  • Be aware of the mentee’s progress

  • Provide feedback and advice

  • Be aware of the mentee’s strengths and areas of development

  • Share stories, including mistakes

  • Refer mentees to other business associates

  • Be helpful in expanding your mentee’s network

  • Respect confidentiality

This would give mentors an opportunity to impart knowledge and support the growth and development of not only young developers, but also the greater Newark area. This is a volunteer position. If you are willing to make the time commitment and meet the aforementioned requirements, expectations, and responsibilities, please apply below. We appreciate your enthusiasm to nurture the entrepreneurial spirit of young developers from the Jumpstart Newark Program.
